Svengelska blir det idag!
Måndag -Charlie's mom thought his urin looked a little pink/red so she brought a sample in for us to check it. Turns out the dip stick showed a huge elevation in albumin, and sure enough, looking at the sample I could even see albumin crystals that even glow in yellow! This is the first time I've ever seen those crystals. I notified the veterinarian (vet) and she wanted to owner to bring him in asap, esp since she just told us that he actually hasn't been eating all that well lately, which is very unusual for him. He's normally a bouncy happy lab that will eat anything and everything!
A little bit later after the owner got home, she called us and said he looks a little yellow and is acting funny. She brought him right in, and oh yes, he was pretty yellow. We ran some bloodwork (liver values not so great) and decided to hospitalize and put him on IV (intravenous fluids/dropp) fluids. I worked with him all day, checking on him and he was still strong, bouncy, was happy when I bought him a teddybear to sleep with. He totally melted my heart.
Tisdag-Charlie is a little more yellow and kinda mellow. Vet decides to do a ultrasound and I'm crossing my fingers it's something fixable. Can be bad, as long as it's fixable!!
Ultrasound is rough, he is a big boy and it takes two girls (me included) to hold him down and still so our girl can do her job. Ultrasound showes he has irreversable liverdisease. Crap. That means that the liver-medication he's on won't help at all. Nothing will.
Vet talks to owner and owner is crying on the phone but schedules his euthanasia for next morning. Vet has consulted with specialists and other vets but noone can give a good prognosis. Owner wants me to come in and check on him again that night so he spends another night with us. Charlie is so frickin' cute! I try to feed him but he won't take anything. I make him a smörgåsbord but he doesn't want to eat. My stomach hurts for him.
Onsdag -I come in extra early to take Charlie potty but he doesn't want to leave his cage. He is barely wagging his tail for me today. I don't see a point in taking him out when his parents will be there soon. I sit and pet him instead. The jingle of his collar doesn't excite him either. He's very yellow and his yellow skin shines through his brown fur.
Mom and Dad comes to say goodbye and he gets really happy and excited, for a minute. Then he has to lay down. Mom and Dad is crying a lot and I try to stay away from them. Vet doesn't need my help thank god! It's a younger couple and they brough his big stuffed toy. It didn't take a lot of drugs to make him pass the rainbow bridge. Charlie is now in doggie-heaven.
